Mute by Mide Benedict

That Friday, everyone was spitless, yet it felt as if we spoke all at once in fading tones. Adiza, Halimat's sister wore it differently, her eyes, blood red, her tongue, twisted. Mine was twisted too. Halimat laid right there, silent and unmoving; each gaze at her drove tears out of my eyes.

God and The Snail: Poetry For Some One Lost Soul

Sometimes it feels Like all is done, That this life of ours Is caught in deadly thorns: From where we cry for help in a land Where to have ears is a great taboo! But in all these... we remember...

WHO DOES THIS BELONG TO? By MIDÉ BENEDICT

This is for those Who see life as an unfair land, Where growth is fairly found only On luck's fragile and ferocious tree: It is for those whose eyes only See reality as a coin Always tossed to uncertainty: For those who see misery As an inescapable ditch, Never to be seen when its mouth agars, Never to be escaped when its venom runs, But to be delivered like a slave for a ritual, Thrown like a cotyledon into dry soil, To germinate failure like a blocked well, Hoping to salvage a droughty throat. For those whose first name is lucky, Whose last name is uncertainty And middle name misery, Know that which you know not that The poison in your tongue is The wine your life drinks; It drinks on and on till stupor calls for death And stupidity dresses its grave Like a young man before a mirror, Staring unthinkingly at his face, Till he sees greyness in his eyes. This is for those who see eye to eye With the words on this slate. Image by Midé Benedict

TIED TO FREEDOM by Mide Benedict

Don’t hold me down L ike I’m in some cave Just like a bird flies Where nothing breathes light Through a hidden dark sky L ike an existence lost in inexistence, Locked up in a bottle     T hat only lives every day in an every minute coffin Tightened with an unbreakable cover.    Free me I said, but you brought me this! What freedom is more painful than   Eye balls without sights; faith without work like To walk on a spot;                    Mountains tied to your legs   While eyes go dark                    As you walk unmoving: In a place surrounded by light;            What a freedom! Picture Poetry: THE BOY WHO REVEALED HIS SOUL

Here I am, in the water that cools, That soothes my body, Opening my mind And diluting my soul. Here I am, a boy who reveals his soul, About the hardship of my being Left on the shape of my torn soles Painted with dark colours on the rough canvas of my life: And here i am, again, revealing my soul. For who will I tell, except you, about mama Who was said to have killed papa By the ones he held close to heart, All for the love of money Flowing to a mirageous eternity? Who will I tell that his body wasn't buried in his home And that his only son is now a sheep in the street Left with the memories of his departed bloods? Who will I tell about last night That a boy of a morning age Was struck in the night By a man of a night ape Who made him gush blood from his anus!? I feel the pain right there beneath I feel it too deeply in my breath And also in my darkened heart, tearing my being. Ah, who will I tell of this "harbour in a mean nation”? Who will ...

ASK THE BOYS by Mide Benedict

Ask the boys Whose hands were covered With the mud of their mother's grave, Ask them if they really knew What laid within the soil below their feet. Tell the boys Whose toy kits were the bones Of their closest mates Ask them if they knew The femur their father once owned Is now the fervour for the dog to crack: Tell the boys who were Snatched from the hands of dreams And handed over to imbalance When the single song of sorrow Tore their eardrums off peace.... Ask them if they still have dreams I doubt they will say no, They do have dreams they may never find. HOW STAYING INDOORS MAY CHANGE YOUR LIFE by Mide Benedict

You know people make it look as if your world is in shreds when you stay indoors; they may not care about what you do when you're within the confine of your home, they may not care what you need it for, whether that's the only thing that makes you sane, they may not know what in there, behind that your most precious door you adore, all they know is; your life sucks, and they say it even when they don't. Suddenly you begin to feel the heat of their words around your head like a piece of feather kept close to fire to be pampered by the odour of its own shrinking skin, you begin to drown in that assumption that whether they are right, whether your life is a pale of dung left in a room, locked up to smell to itself, you then one time decided to leave the house, you know, to feel what other people felt and hear what other people heard that makes then sing aloud and say, hosanna to their highness, then you discover, you don't flow along with their ideology, that their wo...

PICTURE POETRY: BLIND CYCLE

Artist: Anonymous Poem by Mide Benedict Red eyes does not mean pain, Does not mean sorrow That comes from another's hand. It may be that you denied sleep Of its night food and now your eyes are red. But when the eyes are red And cheeks are swollen Like water tubes about to bust open Then one of your ribs, broken Your once sexy lips, open And your bum sits outside of your house On the tiled floor Hoping that a voice would call out your name And tell you to come in and feed his pleasure Then that is the pain you didn't cause But rather chose to remain in till death do you part. Wait, do you know... I don't think so That in this your love affair, Death died a long time ago And has been buried in an unmarked place So the death you seek in your vow to do you part Is a knownless life that has no breath in its lungs. Break the chain! “But I choose to remain, you can let...” ‘No, just break the chain!' All your life, you've had that dream T...

MY THOUGHTS ON GENDER EQUALITY By Mide Benedict

I believe the word equality should be a word that synchronizes our thoughts on living, on character correction and human rightness. It should not be an ideology left or embraced by one person, a few or perhaps many; rather it should an ideological stance that captures and envelopes the mind of every human being.  It should be a word being used as a compulsory synonym to freedom because if we say we fight for freedom or we have won freedom for humanity, while leaving the female gender behind, then our struggle, blood and act are false and cannot be in anyway accepted as freedom. It's like rescuing a cow but leaving its horns behind; it's most evident the cow with not survive the blink of time.  I strongly believe that if education is you to be offered, then it should be for all, speech, it should be for all, and also employment should be based on capacity and the ability of the human being being tested for the employment opportunity, wheter or not they are su...

NIGHT OF NEVER DAY by Mide Benedict

I saw a tree in a nest Then the nest was in a cage And the cage was hidden in a room Absent of light But filled with Active familiar voices like That from a dormant mind. Then I realised that Some are nothing but voices That were never heard, Love that was never felt, Peace that never reigned, Some are paths that were never treaded. They are smokes of no fire. So what happens when they are gone? They remain in our hearts as moons Left by the night of a never day.

A TORN HEART by Mide Benedict

Speak to my standing ears, Can I burn that fire in mind Without sorrow and odium Burning theirs with might? Some say I'm full of none, No love, no passion not even lust. Some gossip of my taste and ways, Ringing bells behind me as I make my path Through the street and town I stay, That this heart of mine Is chained and sealed and Locked with a key that has Odysseyed into the bottomless pit. That my emotions are in exile; Banished from coming close to a skirt. Yes, they share no wrong in what they say But they are dead to knowing what has become of my heart. Not today, Nor yesterday, Have I trained my strength To lead those hitches of mine To their death But I couldn't, For long have tried Yet I can't, For this heart, if truth be adorned, Has made love a traitor that must be sent to peace. But now you have to heed my call All you gossips that stones. Speak to me, Can I love with this heart still mine Or dream of a hip with this terrified ...

HIDDEN SELF by Mide Benedict

Does anyone really know What goes on inside you? You are the once erect Bin now like a trash Left in the incinerator To burn to ash. Does anyone really see the blood gush? That follows your every step The touch of pain caved within your skin? Or do they just see the smile, The rush of a dry stream Flooding the desert of your mind? Or maybe they see a rabbit; The white in heart and a perfect coat But if only they went deep; deeper Reached for the mind Uncoated the heart They would find it was a crab In the hole; A mountain not a foam A being trying to hold All the aches of the soul. But if they knew all along The decay of your root, The dust in your shelf Then you've only been a pawn On your chess board An end in your game A tear in your dress A distress in redress. No one will mock you But everybody mocks.

BLINK POETRY Mide Benedict

One day, there will be no day. Home will take us from our homes And life will kill our lives, Give us deaths or rapture us instead Till we are no more of where we are. ...................................................... I saw beer in your tears Do you plan on drinking out your fear Which remains each time your sense Comes alive again?  .......................................................... A child has a child whose father is the father of the child. A mother has a son whose father is the father of the mother. A slave has a child whose father is the master to the slave child. A mad woman has a child whose father is the man who gave her food last night. Mide Benedict

SAVED IN GRACE THROUGH GRACE by Mide Benedict

Many read the bible, which is the word of truth: they see the truth,

ART OF SURPRISE
